“Elton John”

best of clashes

During a phone conversation, I mentioned I was going to see Elton John with my siblings. He made an anti-gay remark which I, at first, thought was a joke. He then proceeded to get angry and go on an anti-gay rant. When I told him that I had several gay friends and was pro-gay rights and that I tried to explain things to my young daughter so she would be tolerant, he told me he thought less of me as a person and said maybe I should start taking my daughter to church.

Aftermath: I hung up on him. He proceeded to call me or have his friend call me for days. I didn’t answer. I’m now happily married—to someone else.

“Punching Bag”

best of clashes

When I was in high school, I dated a guy for about 7 months. He would randomly punch lockers and bleachers in fits of rage. I told him I didn’t want to be a battered woman and broke it off with him.

Aftermath: He’s been in jail three times for domestic abuse.

“For the dog”

clashes

We were engaged for six months when she got accepted to grad school out of the country. We had been living together for awhile, and I didn’t want to move back into the dormitory. I thought we should elope so that I could keep my dog and the apartment we had at the time. Her dream has been more important than me for five years now.

—Schitstick

Aftermath: Married as far as the paperwork goes, however my new significant other is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me and she is willing to give up everything to be with me…. Divorce is near and possibly a new life with someone else

“Phone”

clashes

Realized how much of an a-hole he was when he barged into my room demanding his phone back because “I stole it” and then told me to, “never f-ing talk to him again.” Why did I have his phone? He was piss drunk and puking while I stood by him to make sure he was okay. I kept his phone for safe-keeping.

—Hanna

Aftermath: We were broken up before this but were trying to remain friends. This wasn’t the first time since being broken up that he was drunk and got mad at me for a trivial reason. Made me realize how much he took me for granted and still didn’t appreciate me.

“Gamer Girl”

best of clashes

I kept beating him in every video game we played and it really pissed him off. In the end, he tried forbidding me to play at all.

—Cecilie

Aftermath: He wanted a gamer girl and he got one. Too bad he wasn’t man enough to handle it. It ended quickly and we never spoke again.
